Sejarah GNU/Linux dimulai dari pesan yang ditulis oleh Linus Torvalds ke comp.os.minix newsgroup pada tanggal 25 Agustus 1991, yang isinya:

  Hello everybody out there using minix, 
I'm doing a (free) operating system 
(just a hobby, won't be big and professional like GNU) 
for 386(486)AT clones. This has been brewing since april, 
and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on 
things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it 
somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system 
(due to practical reassons) among other things) ....
Any sugenstions are welcome, 
but I won't promise I'll implement them :-)

PS. Yes -- it's free of any minix code, 
and it has a multi threaded fs. it is not protable[sic]
(uses 386 task switching, etc), and it probably never will 
support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(

Dari pesan td, mulailah era linux dan open source dimulai, itu klo ga salah yee,
lanjut! karena bersifat free n open source, banyak programmer2 tertarik n penasaran dg
sistem operasi yg dibuat om Linus. Meskipun pada awalnya blm dikenal sebagai "linux"( blom
aqiqahan jee, maka blm punya nama), lama2 banyak yg mengakui kelebihan yg dimiliki, akhirnya diberi nama "linux", sesuai nama si-empunya--Linus+X--, tp kenapa "X" y? apa g ad huruf yg lain?
tp mungkin juga karena ad maksud yg laen, si-X mungkin untuk melawan raja yg lalim..
critanya sampai sini dlu... nyambung.. kapan2.
